Tom Smedley, Owner/Trainer
Tom is the proud owner of the majestic Sumac Hill Farm. His lessons provide a fun and challenging way to learn about horses, horsemanship, and horseback riding.
Tom's father, Chuck Smedley, grew up near City Park in Denver. As a young man, Chuck dreamed of life in the country. After serving as a dentist for the Navy during World War II, Chuck returned to Denver to raise his family on a special piece of land surrounded by the Highline Canal that would later became Sumac Hill Farm.
"We started with one beautiful Appaloosa Mare. My father traded dental fees for stud fees, and we began Sumac Hill Farm's Appaloosa horse family," said Tom, remembering Sumac Hill Farm's history.
Growing up with horses allowed young Tom to teach trail riding and Horsemanship on Dude Ranches in Colorado and Wyoming, which he then brought home to Sumac Hill Farm. At the core of Tom's teaching is an emphasis on safety, which is meant to help people to understand the special bond that can be created between horse and human. Tom and his family hope to share the blessing of Sumac Hill Farm and the rewards of building special relationships with their beautiful horses.
